The Part 3 MRCOG is a clinical assessment of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies. Passing the Part 3 exam leads to the award of the Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) and remains the essential waypoint for UK trainees to pass from core training to higher training (ST6 and ST7).

Format of the assessment

The Part 3 MRCOG Clinical Assessment consists of 14 tasks in a circuit, each task based on one of the 14 modules detailed in the syllabus.

Each of the Part 3 modules is assessed in the context of five domains:

Patient safety

Communication with patients and their relatives

Communication with colleagues

Information gathering

Applied clinical knowledge

Each of the 14 tasks will assess between three and four of the domains to reflect everyday clinical practice where, for example, communicating with patients is inextricably linked with applied clinical knowledge, or communicating with colleagues also involves aspects of patient safety.

Each task is 12 minutes in length, which includes 2 minutes of initial reading time.

Eligible candidates can apply for the Part 3 MRCOG online. The application period is only open for a short period of time: please visit the Part 3 MRCOG exam calendar page for information about when you can apply. Any requests for special arrangements during the exam must be submitted before the closing date for applications.

The Part 3 MRCOG Clinical Assessment assesses the application of core clinical skills in the context of the skills, knowledge, attitudes and competencies as defined in the Part 2 MRCOG curriculum.

In preparing for the exam, candidates should refer to the Part 2 MRCOG revision resources pagein addition to the Part 3 specific resources listed below.

Book

The Part 3 MRCOG: Your Essential Revision Guide book is available from Cambridge University Press. This book is essential reading for any trainee preparing to sit the exam. The text includes written examples of every module, links to videos showing candidates attempting four real Part 3 tasks, examiners' comments, and a detailed discussion of each example.

eLearning

StratOG has launched a new Part 3 MRCOG Clinical Assessment resource to give candidates the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the format and how it is assessed. Using interactive videos, a circuit of 14 tasks has been created to reflect a Part 3 MRCOG Clinical Assessment circuit. The resource is available in the Exam Preparation section of StratOG. A sample videofrom the resource is freely available.

  • QUESTION:Is there a time limit between passing the Part 2 MRCOG and passing the Part 3 MRCOG?

ANSWER:No, but the College does require you to have attempted the Part 3 at least once within seven years after passing the Part 2 MRCOG.

  • QUESTION:After passing the Part 2 MRCOG written exam, do I have to appear for the immediately succeeding Part

ANSWER:No. Candidates who pass the Part 2 MRCOG written exam must attempt the Part 3 MRCOG clinical assessment within seven years (pro rata). If they do not attempt the Part 3 MRCOG clinical assessment within this timeframe, they will be required to take the Part 2 MRCOG exam again.

  • QUESTION:I have passed the MRCOG but have not received my certificate. Who should I contact?

    ANSWER:Please email the Membership Relations team or call +44 20 7772 6248.

  • QUESTION:What’s the procedure if I want a more detailed breakdown of my exam results?

ANSWER:Candidates’ results letters contain the feedback approved by the Examination and Assessment Committee. For more information, please read the RCOG’s complaints and appeals procedures.

  • QUESTION:What courses do you recommend to help prepare for the Part 3 MRCOG?

ANSWER:The only courses the RCOG can wholeheartedly recommend are those run by the College itself. Visit the College’s courses and events pages for more information. A dedicated Part 3 eLearning resource will be available on StratOG in Summer 2016 and an official preparation book will be published later in the year.
